* Albumin and cholesterol are negative acute phase proteins (proteins whose concentration in blood plasma decreases at the onset of inflammation).
** Cholesterol levels are associated with lipoproteins present in the blood, especially VLDL (very low-density lipoproteins). VLDLs are made in the liver and are necessary for transporting fats in the blood. Cholesterol levels are lowest at calving (2.28 mmol/L) and should be higher than 2.86 mmol/L in fresh cows.
*** Ratio of albumin to globulin. Measure of inflammatory status. A low ratio indicates activation of the immune system and inflammation.
